Cpd23 - good intentions...

So cpd23 here we go.
I'm a long way from being a new professional. When I first started my career everyone was excited about the introduction of CD ROM databases. My colleague and I shared Vax machine. Eventually that was replaced with an Apple Mac, which we thought was incredibly generous and forward thinking of our employer. We communicated with phone calls and wrote notes to each other and made full use of internal mail. So I remember a world when email was new and we felt like early adopters. Oh and the ways we used to attempt to use the Internet - gopher anyone?

I couldn't consider myself an early adopter now. I tweet in a sporadic way but have avoided bloggs as who'd want to know my musings? I'm not interesting enough, etc...

This cpd23 is a good kick to get back some of that enthusiasm. Sure it's an impossible summer to do this. We are introducing RFID and a whole new way of handling enquiries so we are all madly busy and stressed. But then when will there be a good time..?

  1. Hi Liz, I also remember CD Roms and being allowed to actually load them on computers myself (IT people don't faint). As a sporadic user of Facebook myself, I often find myself writing a post then thinking 'nah' and deleting it again in case anyone thinks I'm daft, I'm hoping these 'things' will build my confidence. Thanks for taking the time to look at my post and good luck with yours.

  2. Hi Liz, I reckon that could be the CPD23 motto: "but then when will there be a good time..." I'd be interested to hear how the RFID goes so I hope you find time to write!

  3. Gopher? Heavens yes, and WAIS too. I used to spend ages fiddling with something called Trumpet Winsock, whose precise function I cannot recall. I remember more clearly trying to network five (count them! five!) PCs to the server that ran our catalogue using Windows for Workgroups 3.11. It took months, and, even at the end of that, only worked when it felt like it.

  4. Ah, another person who's doing this through Interesting Times - but, as you say, if not now, then when? Hope the self-issue installation went smoothly.
